GIZ Conducts Focused Group Discussions with Sipaway Island Associations

MAY 12, 2023

The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) conducted a focused group discussion (FGD) with representatives of the three associations in Sipaway Island today, May 12.
The three organizations that participated in the discussion were the Caimito Marginal Fisherfolk Association (CAMAFA), Magsaysay Seahorse Fisherfolks Association (MASEFA), and Ka Butoy Fisherfolk Association (KABUFA).
Terence Dacles, GIZ Solid Waste Management Consultant, said FGD aimed at establishing whether programs and projects regarding solid waste management existed and identifying the issues and challenges which will serve as a basis of information needed in any future programs from the government as well as partner agencies.
Arianne Adol, GIZ Solid Waste Management Advisor, added they also want to know the best practices of the island residents in managing their waste and the needed support to improve said practices and learn the lessons at the grassroots level because they know more about their needs, problems, and the solution.
Sharon Gadiane, KABUFA secretary, said their associations exerted effort to implement proper waste management, still support from the local government and other community members is needed.
She is glad that they were able to express their problems and needs as Sipaway Island is now growing as a tourist spot.
Representatives of the Integrated Waste Management/Pollution Control Division under the City Environment Management Office headed by Engr. Arthur Batomalaque assisted in the activity.
