Brgy. I Families Along River Wall Evacuated

MAY 17, 2023

Nine out of 10 families vacated their properties in Purok Tindalo, Brgy. I and temporarily sheltered at said barangay’s covered court since May 13, as portions of their residences and rip-rap retaining wall along Palampas River showed cracks and possible collapse.

The other family is currently living with their relative.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and Barangay Palampas officials, Punong Barangay Joselito Lopez, and Barangay Kagawad John Pomar Jr. led the evacuation after a resident reported that cracks were visible in their house situated within the perimeter of the rip-rap retaining wall.

Yesterday, May 16, City Mayor Renato Y. Gustilo, CDRRM Officer Joe Recalex Alingasa Jr., Engr. Rexter Nemenzo of the City Engineering Department, Punong Barangay Lopez, and Barangay Kagawad Pomar assessed the area.

CDRRM Officer Alingasa said the cracks or fissures are signs of hollow subsurface, possibly caused by the scouring of the riverbed after the previous flooding.

Alingasa said the community supported the mayor on what actions to take and that the local engineering department is now looking into viable interventions to make. He added they would wait for the in-house geological researcher for further assessment of the area.

He thanked the residents for cooperating but emphasized the intervention would take time. He also said they would link with different agencies to help the evacuees and apologized for the inconvenience.
